At 60 degrees North, Shetland summers see little darkness. Nights are lit by the 'simmer dim', the summer light, when the sun barely sets. People often think this means our winters are very dark. It is true that we may not get many hours of winter sunshine each day but our winter light has a magical quality.  The warm sunset colours can last for hours, lighting up the colours of our landscape. And when it does get dark, look up, as you may catch a glimpse of the 'mirrie dancers', the Aurora Borealis.
